Unfolding the map…

Type every country of the region from memory. Each correct name fills in on the map, the clock counts down, and when you give up the map shows which ones were missing.

How typing works

Write a name and it is taken the moment it is complete; there is no need to press anything. Capital letters and accents are optional, St. counts as Saint and a leading The is ignored. Names in English, Italian, Hungarian and Finnish are all accepted, together with common short forms such as USA, UK, Ivory Coast, Czech Republic, Burma or Holland.

When a longer name could still follow, as with Niger and Nigeria or Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, the quiz holds back until you press Enter or stop typing for a moment. A country from another region, or one you already have, is turned down with a short note.

Time and points

Easy allows 14 seconds per country, Medium 9 and Hard 6; no round is shorter than a minute and a half. Every country you name is worth 100 points; if you name them all, each second left adds 5 more.

The hint shows the first letters of an easy country you have not named yet and rings it on the map, but it costs 15 seconds. Give up shows every missing country on the map and lists them under your result.

Pencil notes

  • Sweep the map in one direction, for example west to east along the coast, then the inland countries row by row. A system beats a burst of memory.
  • Start with a small region. South America has 12 countries and Oceania 14; Africa with 54 is a different challenge.
  • Keep an eye on the filled map. The gaps show you exactly where the missing names sit.
  • If a name does not count, try another spelling or the short form; the list of accepted forms is generous.

Questions about this quiz

Which spellings are accepted?

Every country name in the four languages of this site, plus common alternatives and older names. Capitals and accents can be left out.

How long is the world round?

All 194 countries, with 14, 9 or 6 seconds for each depending on the level. Choose a region in the atlas for a shorter round.

What happens when the time runs out?

The round ends and the map shows the countries you did not name. The result is saved, and the record for that region and level counts too.
