Maple Map Quiz

Who pays for the maps

Every map on Maple Map Quiz is free to open, yet drawing the atlas takes hours and keeping it online comes with a server bill. Here is how those costs are meant to be met, and the lines the atlas will not cross.

Free to play, no account

All six quiz modes, the quiz of the day and each country page open for anyone who turns up. No sign-up, no trial, no paid corner of the atlas; your scores sit in your own browser.

Adverts in marked places

The plan: a few boxes headed “Advertisement” on the reading pages of the atlas – the home page, the atlas and country lists, the rules and the three guides – pay the running costs. They sit between the text sections and never on a page that holds a quiz.

Google AdSense is the network being connected for those boxes. Until it is switched on, each box shows a small pencilled note of ours inviting an advertiser or a sponsor. The atlas runs no ad network and sets no advertising cookie today; the privacy page lists what changes the day AdSense starts.

Sponsoring a quiz

A firm, a school publisher or a club can also back one quiz mode or one of the ten atlas selections. That quiz then carries a plain “Sponsored by …” line with the backer’s name, so you can always see who supports which map. Sponsors buy that line and nothing else – questions, answers, outlines and World Bank figures stay as they are. No quiz has a sponsor yet.

What the atlas will never do

  • Adverts inside a quiz – on the map, over the answer buttons or between two questions.
  • Paid advantages: every level, mode and hint stays free for everybody.
  • Selling or passing on visitor data – there is hardly any to begin with, since your scores stay in your browser.
  • Pop-ups or overlays that cover a round while you play.
